RELIABILITY!🔥 Purchased my Nvidia Shield TV Pro in 2015. I have friends who have gone through SEVERAL streaming devices, but, my shield is still working flawlessly! Worth every penny!
Uncompressed Atmos, no other device does it. For an enthusiast channel, you think they would mention this. Especially for those of us with a full Atmos home theater setup.
Yeh they have no idea! For those who want to rip and stream uncompressed atmos the shield is the only device. I’ve spent $10000 on audio equipment do you think I care about an extra $50 to have the highest quality.
I have a full Atmos and DTS-X cinema room, I was most pleased the other night when I watched something on Amazon Prime via my Shield and noticed it was in full Atmos - I don't often watch Prime. Also able to watch my ripped blu rays with Atmos/DTS-X
Audio, audio, audio... THAT is the reason to buy the Shield TV. That's why I'm praying they keep making them or hopefully refresh the line. If other device manufacturers would allow you to use the different audio formats, even if I had to buy a license for those formats, I would consider buying another player. Until then it's Shield TV and only Shield TV for my home theater.
How do they not mention the phrase “TrueHD” in this entire video?!? THAT is the most likely reason anyone should be considering the Shield. If Apple TV would support TrueHD pass through (and in a truly magical world, Dolby vision profile 7 and 5) then it’d be over, my Shield would go in the trash tomorrow
@@waltdraper7144 This is from the 4K Cube product page: Dolby Atmos, 7.1 surround sound, 2-channel stereo, and HDMI audio pass through up to 5.1. No list for 7.1 or DTS HD.
You definitely get what you pay for. Chromecast might be 3x-4x cheaper but it has bad UI lag, and it takes 3x-4x longer to fast forward through a beefy 4k video streamed locally through Plex. You can feel the wimpy hardware at every step. And why hog the WiFi trying to stream 4k to a device that is essentially static? A reliable home setup has everything static connected via a LAN port, which the Chromecast hasn't. The Chromecast remote is awfully bottom rounded, as if it was actually designed to be slippery. I dropped it like every day from the couch and it always goes with a loud, heart wrenching bang. Overall the Chromecast is a Lite device with wimpy hardware, it lacks essential ports and it only leaves you wanting a better home streaming experience. It is better suited to enable smart functionality to an old, secondary TV that is approaching end of life. I wish I would have bought the nVidia TV Shield Pro from the get go.
I have the Shield tube. For me it's incredible, cause my TV is connected to a 25 year Sony Hi-fi, and with only the shield remote which has an ir blaster, I can power on or off both the TV (Hdmi-cec) and the Hi-fi (ir blaster).
Considering the 2015 OG shield tv is still powerful enough and is STILL getting updates, I DEFINITELY think that the 2017 & 2019 models are ABSOLUTELY power enough and current.
I avoided The Shield for years because of the price and went through a few cheaper streamers and much frustration. Finally got one and never looked back. I get virtually everything I could possibly want using kodi etc and it never lets me down. I have set up 3 more for friends and they always rave about it.
As a 2017 shield owner, it could really do with a hardware update, 128gb storage and min 6gb ram at minimum. A SoC update would be *very* welcome too but the storage and ram are more critical
The Shield is one of the most perfect products I have ever purchased. I use it 95% as a Plex streamer and very rarely to watch HBO Max. Used to stream Netflix, but I cancelled it. Never had any problems with the Shield. No hickups, no buffering, no formats unable to be played. At least for my consumption pattern. Others way have a different experience, but it works like a charm for my needs 😍👍
@@PhilNickinson hardware may be good, but the software updates are atrocious. A ton of users have went back to older firmware versions because of the ads and bloat that the updates have implemented. A lot of the apps don’t work properly from firmware to firmware. But perhaps you have been lucky, me not so much, nothing but issues and horrible audio output on Netflix and Prime.
Ive had many issues in the last year, mostly related to random freezes, and input control. It would turn on woth the tv, and immediately turn the tv off. Ive tried updating and developer settings, but its still buggy. Many times i have to restart it by pressing the reset button on the shield. It was great in the beginning, but some updates broke it completely.
@@redusercolor That really blows, sorry to hear that. I´ve had no issues at all with the Shield. I use it to stream Plex from my nas on 5ghz wireless. No issues and no freezes or hickups.
dolby vision profile 7 FEL dual track isnt supported, the shield plays it like MEL without the secondry track. but minor issue over all. because I watch alot of blue ray rips tho I got the chromecast with google tv which is the only device that does support it fully currently (not talking about niche china blueray players)/
To take advantage of your OTHER hardware like your new OLED TV or sound system, you need a quality streaming box. All the Dolby Vision, HDR, audio formats, buffer-less streaming, fluid interface, gigabit ethernet.. you don't get a lot of that with other streaming boxes.
The AI Upscaling makes the Shield TV our favorite option. I do wish Google would create a more powerful CCw/GTV that had more memory. I still can't get over the fact that they put time and effort into producing an HD version to save $20!
Wish we could get a refresh. Reasons I’m still keeping the Shield is for the Plex server and support for different Hi-Res files such as Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, etc.
Hi, you are not talking about HD audio what is the really outperform of this tvbox and why is working for years and still will win... is one on the only certified android with dts-hs, dolby atmos, dtsx and Truehd.
No match frame rate, their "beta" feature barely works - I see many image issues with the new shield pro and keep going back to ATV 4K. Even the 4K upscaling looks a lot better with ATV 4K. I ain't big on apple but nothing comes close to ATV 4K (except for lack of audio passthrough which Shield does)...
sorry I have both....and there is no way the upscaling on the apple tv is better than shield. I'm going to sell the apple for another shield. it just doesn't match it functionality and video/audio performance.
It is wild to me the once market leader on a high volume consumer device is silent about a potential refresh. I suspect we’ll get a refresh mid-late next year with the new Tegra T239 and Ampere GPU that’s slated for the Switch Pro.
I went from the Raspberry Pi 3B to the Shield TV Pro as my Plex server. Gigantic difference. Whereas the Pi couldn't be accessed remotely because it just couldn't handle it, the Shield Pro does it without a problem. Simply awesome as a Plex server. I also have the Firestick Pro Max, and the Shield Pro just puts out a better overall picture for everything...Plex, streaming, etc. I'm fully invested in the Apple ecosystem, but since the Apple TV can't act as a Plex server, this is my box of choice. Was worth every penny.
Unless something has changed recently, too bad there isn't native support for RUclips HDR, at least not with the 2017 models that I have. Otherwise, they have been great for almost every other streaming use-case.
Yeah, my main gripe is that it's still full price and rarely goes on sale lower than 20 percent off. Imagine spending full retail price for something that was released in 2019.
There is no true replacement for Shield when it comes to its capability of playing TrueHD Atmos, PLEX server. I wish they come out with an update with better hardware around $125-150 price point.
3 year old hardware that STILL has the best Plex client software that allows me to play TrueHD Dolby Atmos and DTS:X on my movies. Other devices need to step up.
The tegra x1 is far beyond needing a replacement. Remind me again what exactly doesn’t it have? Don’t contribute to e waste just because you want something shiny and new when it can’t meet the specs.
The Shield TV Pro also has Ethernet, so you're not overloading your WiFi like other devices tend to. Running two 4K streams to two devices can eat up a significant amount of your WiFi bandwidth, and I'd argue it's definitely cheaper if you have Ethernet available to get several Shield TV Pros than to upgrade your WiFi sufficiently to handle full WiFi based streaming. And it's still the only device that supports a full BD Bitstream, so if you have Plex/Emby/Jellyfin and high quality media with Dolby Atmos or DTS HD or the like, it will just play it, while every other device needs it transcoded at the server, increasing cost there. The one feature I wish it had that makes the Roku Ultra better as a pure streaming services device is AV1 support, and hopefully a refresh in the next year or two will add AV1 and HDMI 2.1 for 8K or 4K 120 Hz.
Still going strong on my 2015 500GB pro sheild tv. Although, the game controller will not charge anymore, sadly. It was great value for money obviously.
About this NVIDIA SHIELD TV does it provide a TVADDONS APP enabling you select the various IPTV applications and is there available a tv channels program guide with it (EPG) Thanks.
I have a 77 inch G2, a full surround system with AVR connected eARC etc. I use Plex via my computer to watch full bit rate UHD 4k Blu ray Dolby Vision/ Dolby Atoms torrents I've downloaded. Some are 70 gig each and more. Anyway, with my LG G2, everything reverts downward to HDR not Dolby Vision. Also, the sound is sub par via the G2 processor . Any movie close to 100 mb in data won't even play because the LG A9 processor taps out at 100 mb in data size. Full, non compressed movies are larger than that. The Shield taps out at about 1,000 mb or 1 gig. So, for regular streaming (compressed Hulu, Netfilix, Amazon, RUclips, etc) the LG integrated processor is fine. However, if you have your own flicks and use Plex, the Shield is a must have for the best content period. There is no way around it currently.
Shield is the most powerful android streaming device to date. Period, to think a channel like this would not mention the uncompressed atmos which no other device offer does is a bit weird, AI enhanced is another powerful tool for streaming, not to mention the options to customise it to your liking.
If you prefer to hardline your device with ethernet cable the shield is the only way to go. Almost all other devices max out at 100mbps internet speed through ethernet. They say that is adequate, but with high quality sound and image streaming it just isn't. I run my gig speed internet to my shield with a hard line. I get every bit of my speed through the device.
I have Nvidia Shield Pro, mostly doing streaming not much of gaming... Sometimes, remote won't wake up the shield, so I have to power reset the unit and then it works... I think with gaming before this was a good pick, however, since changes on GeForce Now, games and subscription model, most of the games they made not accessible rendering this console no longer for gaming... Just shows what their business model is, and that is PAY THE FEE (to play games)
Shield TV with a NAS running Plex. Direct Play of absolutely everything. And DTS-HD Dolby True-HD passthrough, and decoding if your TV/Amp/Soundbar can’t do them. That is enough to recommend it. And AI Upscaling is enough to justify the 2019 Pro. It is night and day.
Absolutey agreed. Also don't forget about 2x USB 3.0 ports and Gigabit Ethernet in which I can't understand why the others don't have this. Its obsered.
I'm in the same boat. My older Smart TV is struggling to play PLEX now. The App on my Samsung just blows and it's only from 2017. I need to pick up a streaming device to replace it and I'm liking this. My new 85" QN900b works great with PLEX.
I legit. I'm still using my 2015 Nvidia shield, aluminum case with a fan and everything! This thing still gets updates. It is amazing! And it's still the only device that if you have a slightly older TV that doesn't support proper HDMI CEC protocol mixed in with a newer device like a sound bar and you would like to control them simultaneously that you really have the options to do those things. Google Chromecast 4K or not has options to use IR and CEC protocol, but they don't generally play well together and usually only starts one or the other. Or you have to press the button multiple times. I've definitely had a lot of struggle with it personally.
The chip inside Tegra is old, developed before 2015 when HDR and 4K just hit mainstream. RUclips in HDR requires VP9 profile 2 support and shield hardware doesn’t support it unfortunately. Nvidia never made an updated Tegra chip to add hardware support.
@@Jabid21 no one cares about the technicality of Why the Nvidia Shield doesn't play HDR youtube. Regular consumers shouldn't. This suppose the ultimate streaming device with no compromises. The price says so. I had Shield since launch. I been satisfied for the most part. Just you HDR youtube bugs from time to time. Hopefully they will launch a updated version soon.
@@bighosre10 well it’s up to Nvidia to update the device with the latest chipset if they are serious about the device and the market it caters to. I simply told you why it doesn’t have it and that’s it. You vote with your wallet, make compromises and you get the device that caters to your needs. There is no single ultimate device that is supposed to hold up the test of time as standards, codecs and technology changes over time. Nvidia shield held up for 7+ years with feature set that no other boxes came close to this day and it’s just missing one stupid feature from one stupid app. Boo f’n hoo. Buy another device that works for you. shield’s owners don’t buy a shield to watch a compressed RUclips video. If Nvidia wanted to make an affordable mainstream device, they’d have made one already.
please....most people are now moving their DVD collection to a server and what device has a server built in....clue it ain't apple. Sure the shield has had bugs, but so has the apple tv. look at Reddit for the bug issues. my experience with the shield has been generally flawless.
@@nelsonmendes7551 most people don't have a DVD collection. Those that do still don't care to move it onto a server. You're starting with an incorrect premise.
@@mohamedahmed1023 actually you are, not do they have DVD and Blu-ray, a lot are moving to servers due to the now high cost of streaming and the fact any content they buy and stored on streaming account, can removed at a moment's notice.
@@nelsonmendes7551 dude, most people with streaming boxes have never even heard of Plex. You're falling into the trap of being an enthusiast and assuming you represent a large percentage of the consumer base. I'm an enthusiast too but we're in the vast minority.
@@mohamedahmed1023 dude....without using the ports, which by the way all people will need at some point. just the live tv recording feature is something the average person would appreciate and that is on the android side of things. so having a older tv or even a new one android is best....and the best of android is the shield. Apple tv is nothing but a overpriced, overpowered streaming dongle if you think supposed speed (not really that much of a difference) and the " better UI" is worth nearly 3 times the price of a fire stick....then you need your head read. The functionality of the shield is what makes it worth the price today.
Perfectly timed vid, day before this was posted nvidia announced the end to their game stream feature which in my opinion was a big draw for pc gamers. Local network streaming from your computer with way higher quality than any other service. Not to mention the upscaling. Sad to see it go
I watched this immediately but it has taken me this long to comment. I was one of the people who complained about the attention NVidia Shield got. Thank you for doing this video you didn’t have to so I really appreciate it. No apology was ever needed. Over the last decade consumers have been put under unnecessary pressure to buy the latest shinny new gadget. It is like chasing the wind.
I bought my Shield in 2017. Not a gamer, just using for streaming. Recently the remote hiccuped, can’t open it properly, had to pry open, can’t get batteries to seat properly. Still works, but I get warnings that batteries are low. Can’t find a replacement remote, bought the air mouse it’s hit and miss. eBay has a couple of used remotes like mine for $68. wow. Is there a better option then buying a new Nivea shield?
Shield TV, in my opinion, has gone to crap with the software updates. Audio on Netflix is as quite as a mouse when it comes to centre channel voice/speech. Just do a search about the abysmal updates and all of the bloody ads for crap no one cares about. The console worked great, but the last 3 or 4 updates have caused many users like myself nothing but problems to the point of having to revert back to a previous version of Android TV. For me it is starting to collect dust compared to using any of the new game consoles or older game consoles.
If you only use it for streaming, get something cheaper. But for playing video files its amazing. Its the perfect device for plex. Plays everything you throw at it.
I own 2. They both have been relegated to bedroom service. No longer my go to streaming device any longer. Reliability has been suspect recently, with intermittent crashing, and other minor, but still annoying, stability issues. Google chromecast is similar(kitchen). Thinking its mostly Google software related. My favorite streamer is the apple 4k TV. Own 2. Not an apple fan by any measure, but this box just works, all the time and is user friendly at the same shield tv price point. Not gaming or Plexing on these devices. I still game on an xbox one. LOL. If your in the Apple eco system (I'm not), please seriously consider the Apple 4K TV.
Just picked up my first Shield for my new U8H. Never really looked at them before but needed an external device that could help with the U8H's upscaling. Definitely helped and now that I know how much more it can do, i need to get a controller and hard drive for this thing.
@fivefingerdiscount mine has also developed dirty screen effect and I now see some moderate blooming. There was almost none when I first got it. One benefit of using an external device for streaming is some additional settings you cant access when streaming through the tv apps. Specifically, the white level and black level in the Game settings, and the HDMI input Optimization settings.
Apple tv and Roku's during extremely dark scenes (Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon) perform very poorly with blocky blacks on my OLED. Shield tv? Never had that issue with streaming ever.
Personally I use mine for Steam and GeForce Now and IPTV serivces now granted you can use those services with any updated box now adays rocking a decent amount of ram and Android OS ...but native GeForce Now app works and acts differently and better on the Nvidia Shield that it stand alone on other devices IMO
I am a newb still to all this but I use shadow pc and was looking at mini pcs to have a better experience with it. (I love it on my mobile don't get me wrong) but I think this is the route i will take.
We have the Shield Pro in combination with a NAS for view downloaded movie's and serie by Kodi. Also have Smarters Pro for IPTV installed, moves very smooth. There will be always a bug or something else, but other devices have that also.
I purchased my NVIDIA Shield in 2016 and it still works, though it's not in 4K my Hisense tv is. But it still looks good in 1080p and I can do much more with my Shield than I can with my Hisense tv. I also have the Google Chromecast for when I travel.
I bought my Shield in 2017 and it still works fantastic. Only thinking about replacing it now because the system is so old that the SofaBaton universal remote I bought won’t work with the 2017 Shield. 😢
A pretty big deal is you can side-load apps onto the Shield like you can on Android phones. I use a RUclips alternative that strips out all the ads, and in-video ads too. That alone is worth paying more for. I also use it as a Plex streamer. I don't have any subscription services, and don't pay for cable. I save all that money every month, so I can afford to pay a little more for my device. Plus the Shield TV Pro is snappy AF, never lags at all. Menu navigation is fantastic.
Right now the only thing that holds me from buying the shield is the fear that a new one could be realised in the near future... so PLEASE Nvidia, JUST UPDATE (I'm waiting for soo long, + I'm starting to consider the new apple tv)
No, because even the 2019 versions still have the MPEG2 decoding bug that shows itself sometimes on certain MPEG2 encoded things, like my local NBC station over HD Homerun.
I've combined the cheaper Shield TV with a GeForce Now RTX3080 membership and the results in image quality in games with extensive ray tracing like Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition are jaw dropping!
@@jackwong5816 If your area is covered by Nvidia's data centers and you have at minimum a 50-100 Mbps connection, you just need a paid GeForce Now membership for good performance, either Priority or Ultimate and either a laptop, a supported Android device, or another supported platform to stream games that you own either on Steam, Epic, Gog, Ubisoft Connect, etc. There is a list of the supported games on the geforce now website. I'm runnning games through the cheaper Nvidia Shield device and an Xbox Series Controller connected to it via bluetooth.
@@pancon5 thanks for the info. Not sure if there's any support here in Hong Kong but I mostly plan to watch TV anyway. I've been using a Steam Link all these years.
I've had the Nvidia Shield Pro since 2015 and it's Amazing however it's old and it could use an upgradedorm it's 2019 very. We need the following; 1TB Storage, VRR, 8K, and HDMI 2.1
I think a lot of people don't realize that Shield outputs audio through its USB. I connect it directly to the Emotiva PT1 USB input, and it sounds better than HDMI. Chromecast is laggy. All the streaming boxes I've used are slower than the Shield. I wish AMD would make a Radeon streaming box.
The shield _was_ the best box of it's kind until recently, thanks to Game Stream. Now that Nvidia is killing that feature (presumably just to promote their subscription service), it's a waste money. I'll keep using mine because I already have it, but Nvidia essentially just bricked $100 worth of hardware for me.
Why does it matter that the hardware is 3 years old? If it still has the capability would a cosmetic refresh only mean it would somehow be more worthy of recommendation? If it was a refresh that included spec upgrades then I can't think of anything that would make it work better than it does now.
Anyone who wants to exploit all the available apps that can be sideloaded will want the Nvidia Shield. I have the pro, and after 3 years you would have to pry it from my cold, dead hand. It’s got all of the hardware power and storage you could want, and the upscaling is phenomenal. Sure, it cost more than many of the android junk boxes with poor menus cost, but it is simply the best all around media box. Buy it, you won’t be disappointed!
I get where Phil is coming from If all you want is a nice easy device to stream shows on the TV then a Roku, Chromecast or Firestick is just fine no need to spend triple for a Shield, But for someone like me who uses Plex everyday and loves how much better it works on a Shield than any other device the extra money is well worth it
I'm a faithful Roku enthusiast at heart, but my older Roku Ultra took a dump. In my research and seeing ALL major streaming devices at work, first hand, I picked up the Shield Pro to see what the hype (2weeks ago) was all about. Needless to say, I was blown away by how zippy this device is and the quality of picture and sound. I always look to get the most bang for my buck, when choosing a new product; and yes, there's always a give and take, which than goes to one's "personal preference." Now, here's my gripe with the Shield TV: it's actually nothing against them, but rather, Android/Google TV App Store. Like all, Apple, Fire TV and even Roku, they all have a give and take within their given ecosystem via their App Store. I actually lost streaming apps with the Shield, but that's not their fault, that's a Google issue. Why is it, that I can download a streaming app to my android phone, but NOT my Android/Google based streaming device?!?! Literally makes NO sense. I will purchase another Roku, but just may keep my Shield Pro as a back-up, as it's quite something to experience first hand. The Roku Ultra is no slouch, but there definitely is something in the Shield's higher price that you can definitely experience right out of the gate, and could highly recommend to any high fidelity enthusiast looking for something more than a mediocre Chromecast device; even the Roku Ultra offers more in picture quality and sound than a Chromecast.
I currently use a Steam Link (the old hardware box, not the app) to stream my PC to my lounge, the one feature I can't do without is being able to exit out of steam big picture mode and view my desktop, to then stream my actual PC screen into my lounge. So my question is, can either of these devices that you've mentioned do that? I'm not fussed about the chromecast as I assume that won't allow me to stream my games in a playable way into my lounge, so this is more about the Shield TV + Pro version. Definitely need the game streaming, and would also like to stream my PC screen like it's plugged in via HDMI to my TV.
Can someone do a video comparing options as far as bit rate etc? I want to know how they compare for streaming remuxes and brrips that are 50+mbps rather than netflix and youtube :)
Actually it went from the controller 🎮 with a screen look to 2 versions of what was called the Nvidia Shield tablet and K1 tablet which was also discontinued and the Shield Stream Box came out which there's been 4 versions and 2 revisions 2015 /2019
The ai upscaling is superb from the Nvidia shield, far better than my TCL 75 inches, I don't think I'll replace this device for anything, it's very good 👍
@@zxcvbnmmasdfghjkl work with every video mate, this is insane buying a cheap china TV with high end panel spec like tcl c835 and replace the video player with shield and you have a level of Sony/Lg/Samsung upscalling and it’s even better because the feature shield had.. I actually seen an LG TV on the market that was branded with Google TV OS /Android and GeForce Now Branded..Sadly in 2019 the Box stopped being shipped with a Controller which imo design wise is spectacular and as of the last few yrs a new toblerone style remote which you can find if you lose it with beeps
I own two Shield TVs for one reason. TrueHD Atmos passthrough to my AVR. If that for that I would used my Chromecast 4K and would have saved myself a bit.
Nvidia Shield rules period. I have the TV and the Pro. I've been using the TV for 2 years and it is still performing flawlessly. Before the Shield I was using the cube and I went thru 2 of them in 2 years and nothing but non stop issues with them. As far as I am concerned there are no other streaming devices but Shield.
Question: I have been an Apple tv owner for many years. People keep talking about Dolby True HD pass through with NVidia Shield. But nothing streams with lossless audio. What's the point of this unless it's just for the PLEX streaming? Really thinking of buying an NVidia Shield or upgrading to the new Apple TV 4k 3rd gen.
Roon, gigabit Ethernet, USB ports and zero dongle. I have both the Google TV dongle and the Nvidia shield but the Google TV is limited to 60hz refresh rate.
Revisiting the Shield and NEVER talking about TrueHD, the only reason people keep this streaming device versus competitors wich much snappier interfaces...
I am just here because I hear with the beta firmware update I can play my Dolby 7.1TrueHD on my amp through plex. Where as my pc won't allow me to do this with the plex app So I am buying one today. Also Atmos support.
I have two sheild pro , love it there so much you can do with this device. The cromecast is nice toy , just like a apple 🍎 tv device This device just doesn't work in my environment. Every one of my friends, or my family members used nivida device and we continually Find the latest cool tools that no other system has . Remember this device may not be right for you, but man I love ❤️ it, nivida sheild Really doesn't need the update you are wanting. The people own sheild hate these update these updates are usually broken, and not tested.
I still have no clue what this is, what this does, or why everyone says I need it. All I am looking for is some sort of an intermediate device to help my television better upscale the apps I already run. I have a 2018 Samsung Q9FN, and it can’t really handle upscaling 720p streaming content.
Wish they would’ve gone over some of the benefits or issues of using nvidia shield for GeForce now or locally streamed games instead of a native app on the tv? Since it’s streaming would there be any benefit at all? You’d think for a gaming focused device they would’ve mentioned this a little more.
What is the issue with a Nividia Shield having older hardware when the hardware it has is still more powerful than most other streaming boxes? Most of the games one would play on it are either retro games (that aren't going to ever need more power) or streaming games (which again, are going to run just fine now and into the future) ? Chromecase / Google TV are the obvious, simple, easy-to-use options but as a powerhouse, niche, gaming, techie option, I don't see a problem with this box, even years from it's debut date. Am I missing something?
Nvidia just announced it's killing off support for GameStream, which had been one of the major selling points for the Shield TV (as well as the defunct gaming tablet). This is presumed to also affect Moonlight, since it depends on the GameStream service in Geforce Experience. And Nvidia has no reason to maintain that, because there are no official clients besides the one on the Shield.
I have a quality gaming computer, Aorus build Nvidia/intel even the large gaming monitor. I have a movie projector with an old playstation3 to watch movies on. Should I get a shield, or should I just get a new playstation or something? This nvida shield streams, but what else can it do, it can't beat my PC set up, so what does it actually do? Can I use it with my PC somehow?
The MAIN thing to comprehend here is that this is a review of "STREAMING DEVICES." While the NVIDIA Shield can certainly do what any "STREAMING DEVICE" can do, the reason why you want one is that THE NVIDIA SHIELD CAN DO SO MUCH MORE. Like gaming -- not that I use it for that. Like Plex -- not that I use it for that. And so on. I have several of the original 2015 models, and I use them as "full media system devices" -- my "living room" NVIDIA Shield has a 1-terabyte MicroSD card installed, plus a 5-terabyte hard drive in one of the two USB ports, and a hub with four other 5-terabyte drives in that. With plenty of room for more, to grow into the future. Android TV allows ME to CHOOSE which apps I want to use to play back my media, and even gives me some options for some of the usual streaming services. I have control of that, not "whatever my device manufacturer decided to give me." This is MASSIVELY IMPORTANT. If all you want is a "STREAMING DEVICE," there are many to choose from. But if you want a full-blown console you can use to do dozens of other things with -- then the NVIDIA Shield still remains pretty much the only such device available. It is VERY IMPORTANT that NVIDIA has continued to update the software in the NVIDIA Shield -- they all use NVIDIA's same, original Tegra X1 processor, and while newer versions have added a few new technologies that didn't even exist back in 2015, NVIDIA has also DROPPED FEATURES in new devices, such as the MicroSD slot I referred to, above. Meanwhile, it has been easy to update to newer remote controls, and of course, whenever the streaming service apps need to be updated, they get updated. So far, it has been a relatively future-proof way to do things with your television and media systems that nearly nothing else can do. Or, at least, nothing else can do with the same ease of usage. And that's why I still use my 2015 NVIDIA Shield(s).

Zidoo Z9X does it, I just switched from Nvidia Shield Pro and won't look back, for local media playback it's better.
@@amp_cackl same ! the apple tv 4k is so snappy I would love to move on from my laggy shield but can't
Didn't the Fire TV cube get a recent update where it's supports lossless audio formats

They most certainly are!
It is, but it's a shame the OG shield doesn't have Dolby Vision or i wouldn't have needed to upgrade it
Yeah Just the 2017 or 2019 should do. Even the 2017 is still legit enough easily.
I avoided The Shield for years because of the price and went through a few cheaper streamers and much frustration. Finally got one and never looked back. I get virtually everything I could possibly want using kodi etc and it never lets me down. I have set up 3 more for friends and they always rave about it.
Do you run VPN and IPTV on it? If so, how does it handle it?
It's still ridiculously good, and I've said that about every hardware iteration. Like it has no business being that good.
People seem to really forget about the upscaling, that stuff is amazing if you want the best picture
I'm really curious to see if that ever happens. The biz case is weird.
Are they on sale anywhere? How much did you get yours for?
you are so right, I keep it only because of audio passthrough, if ATV has the feature, Shield goes out of the house asap
sorry I have both....and there is no way the upscaling on the apple tv is better than shield. I'm going to sell the apple for another shield. it just doesn't match it functionality and video/audio performance.
Stopped using mine until they figure this out.
My Brother in law is Italian.
Oh man! Love my shield, bought the 2017 with 500gb just awesome, plenty of power still using it today, worth every penny.
It is wild to me the once market leader on a high volume consumer device is silent about a potential refresh. I suspect we’ll get a refresh mid-late next year with the new Tegra T239 and Ampere GPU that’s slated for the Switch Pro.
that would be great....but just wondering if this may be the last of it...at least in this form factor
To be fair they'd never really advertised the refreshes when they did happen. Just kinda sprung them on us.
I’ll pay the extra money for lossless audio.
Was worth every penny.
so awesome to see you, I was wondering where you went! Followed you for years on RUclips. Glad to see you here!
It is the only player other than a PC that supports any format you can throw at it and direct play it without transcoding on Plex.
One thing to note is that Nvidia announced the end of life for Gamestream.
I swear to god they emailed me about that literally as I was exporting this video. Crazy.
Does that mean shield TV for gaming is dead?

Whelp. Was just going to buy one until I saw this. Nothing seems to support game streaming anymore. :(
Unless something has changed recently, too bad there isn't native support for RUclips HDR, at least not with the 2017 models that I have. Otherwise, they have been great for almost every other streaming use-case.
@Mike Jones I know they could easily fix that with a firmware update. I don't know why they haven't done so yet.
Ditto
3 year old hardware that STILL has the best Plex client software that allows me to play TrueHD Dolby Atmos and DTS:X on my movies. Other devices need to step up.
Can it read movies files straight from nas skipping plex?
The tegra x1 is far beyond needing a replacement. Remind me again what exactly doesn’t it have? Don’t contribute to e waste just because you want something shiny and new when it can’t meet the specs.
Absolutely.
@jec6613 Could you dm thanks

How does the shield compared to a flagship TV integrated processor, something like an LG G2 or a Sony a95k?
So I can use it as I would a fire stick, I can get unlinked for the 3rd party apps
I bought one the other week (Shield TV) and sent it back after thirty minutes, as it has no RUclips HDR support at all!
Truly gutted about it
You could've saved yourself the hassle with 2 mins of research.
@emilioriofrio7858 true but its like purchasing a TV and not realising they no longer support an aerial
Do these still do 3rd party apps using downloader?
If you prefer to hardline your device with ethernet cable the shield is the only way to go. Almost all other devices max out at 100mbps internet speed through ethernet. They say that is adequate, but with high quality sound and image streaming it just isn't. I run my gig speed internet to my shield with a hard line. I get every bit of my speed through the device.
Yes, it's 3 years old but nothing beats it to this day. That tells you that it was way head of it's class and still is the head of the class.
I love the new Apple TV 4K 2022 but I can't believe there is no VPN support for tvOS, thats the only reason i went back to the shield tv pro (2019).
One thing that sucks about the Nvidia shield it doesn't play HDR RUclips. But my cheap LCD TV from 2017 with the built in RUclips app does.
The chip inside Tegra is old, developed before 2015 when HDR and 4K just hit mainstream. RUclips in HDR requires VP9 profile 2 support and shield hardware doesn’t support it unfortunately. Nvidia never made an updated Tegra chip to add hardware support.

Remove the ads. I have no ads on my Shield. The only things on my homescreen are apps.
If you only use it for streaming, get something cheaper. But for playing video files its amazing. Its the perfect device for plex. Plays everything you throw at it.
Exactly.
Same here, mine has become very sluggish lately as well!
Please, please, please launch an improved version! Its been way too long since it was improved! I've had mine since the first year it was released.
Yes I have a 2014 model and a 2019 model both work great . Still kicks butt.
Right now the only thing that holds me from buying the shield is the fear that a new one could be realised in the near future... so PLEASE Nvidia, JUST UPDATE (I'm waiting for soo long, + I'm starting to consider the new apple tv)
Same here
10 years after and my Nvidia shield still working as day one!!
You do realize that google TV with Chromecast was released in Sept 2020 that makes it over 2 years old not exactly a new product is it
No, because even the 2019 versions still have the MPEG2 decoding bug that shows itself sometimes on certain MPEG2 encoded things, like my local NBC station over HD Homerun.

Have you tried using the steam link app on the shield? I saw that was NVIDIA's suggestion, but I don't know if it's as good.

Why does it matter that the hardware is 3 years old? If it still has the capability would a cosmetic refresh only mean it would somehow be more worthy of recommendation? If it was a refresh that included spec upgrades then I can't think of anything that would make it work better than it does now.
Because refreshes are NEVER just cosmetic.
I get where Phil is coming from If all you want is a nice easy device to stream shows on the TV then a Roku, Chromecast or Firestick is just fine no need to spend triple for a Shield, But for someone like me who uses Plex everyday and loves how much better it works on a Shield than any other device the extra money is well worth it
Plex is garbage.

I always look to get the most bang for my buck, when choosing a new product; and yes, there's always a give and take, which than goes to one's "personal preference."
Now, here's my gripe with the Shield TV: it's actually nothing against them, but rather, Android/Google TV App Store.

I agree with the price point on the shield. Love my shield but the price needs to come down.
Revisiting the Shield and NEVER talking about TrueHD, the only reason people keep this streaming device versus competitors wich much snappier interfaces...
I am just here because I hear with the beta firmware update I can play my Dolby 7.1TrueHD on my amp through plex. Where as my pc won't allow me to do this with the plex app
So I am buying one today. Also Atmos support.
The only thing the shield is missing is RUclips in HDR.
RUclips HDR support & HLG support
I have two sheild pro , love it there so much you can do with this device. The cromecast is nice toy , just like a apple 🍎 tv device
This device just doesn't work in my environment. Every one of my friends, or my family members used nivida device and we continually
Find the latest cool tools that no other system has . Remember this device may not be right for you, but man I love ❤️ it, nivida sheild
Really doesn't need the update you are wanting. The people own sheild hate these update these updates are usually broken, and not tested.
I purchased one two weeks ago. But returned it. Because does not support Xfinity stream app. Couldn't watch my cable channels
Shield is a must for any true home theater enthusiast. Only streaming box available that will passthrough HD audio formats.
I still have no clue what this is, what this does, or why everyone says I need it. All I am looking for is some sort of an intermediate device to help my television better upscale the apps I already run. I have a 2018 Samsung Q9FN, and it can’t really handle upscaling 720p streaming content.
I know what the Nvidia shield tv is so I'll be moving on. But you definitely got me to sub :)
Hey Guys , my mum doesn't have internet but loves movies, can the SHIELD Cyclinder play movies off plex if her hard drive with movies are plugged in?
Wish they would’ve gone over some of the benefits or issues of using nvidia shield for GeForce now or locally streamed games instead of a native app on the tv? Since it’s streaming would there be any benefit at all? You’d think for a gaming focused device they would’ve mentioned this a little more.
It's easy - Shield TV is way more powerful than your average (or every?) TV.
I think most people shouldn't have a problem buying a $300 streaming device if they can afford a $2000 smartphone.
Ist it true, that you don't have native 4K for Netflix or Disney+ ? Only 1080p?
I have a quality gaming computer, Aorus build Nvidia/intel even the large gaming monitor. I have a movie projector with an old playstation3 to watch movies on. Should I get a shield, or should I just get a new playstation or something? This nvida shield streams, but what else can it do, it can't beat my PC set up, so what does it actually do? Can I use it with my PC somehow?
You didn't mention lossless audio?? Dolby true HD support and DTS-X ?
